The game doesn't automatically calibrate the accelerometer, so make sure to do so each time you start the game.
To improve your time, hold down the acceleration button on the right side of the screen.
A full season includes several qualifying laps and tiered runs. Go with a shortened season if you just want to do a single run through the courses.
