Will the Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS Plus get the PS5 upgrade?

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to PS5 just a year after its initial PS4 release. This current-gen upgrade is free for current owners of the game and offers better lighting, a 4K or 60 frames per second mode, a photo mode, and more. FF7 Remake was also announced as a March PlayStation Plus game just one day after that news. This has made players wonder if Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS Plus players will get the PS5 upgrade for free.

Is the FF7 Remake PS5 upgrade free for PS Plus subscribers?

Players who redeemed Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS Plus for PS4 during March 2021 will not be eligible for a free upgrade to the native PS5 version when it launches on June 10, 2021. The free upgrade with all the new features is only for those who have spent money directly on the game digitally or physically. Sony confirmed this on the PlayStation Blog:

“Please note the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake available to PlayStation Plus members is not eligible for the PS5 digital version upgrade.”

It is not clear if Sony will offer some sort of special upgrade path for PS Plus users who want to fork over the money for the extra bells and whistles when the PS5 port hits in June. That likely won’t happen as Sony has somewhat implemented strategies like this in the past, albeit in reverse. Bugsnax was one of the November 2020 PS Plus games and while the PS5 version was included in that month’s lineup, the PS4 version was not, despite both coming in a bundle when purchased.

There are also other oddities surrounding the Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its multiple versions. Yuffie’s episode is being optimized only for current systems so it will not be making its way to the PS4, making it a PS5 exclusive.
