Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players keen on using party chat may be encountering error code 0x89231053. This error appears when the console reports that your network settings are blocking the party chat. While this may seem like a complicated issue, it’s actually possible to fix error code 0x89231053 with a simple check over the system’s NAT type.
How to fix Xbox error code 0x89231053
Error code 0x89231053 appears on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S systems when network settings block party chat. According to Microsoft’s Xbox support team, this error can usually be fixed by ensuring the console’s NAT type is set to Open.
In some cases, error code 0x89231053 will show up after users fiddle around with their network settings. In order for party chat to function properly, the console’s NAT (Network Address Translation) type must be set to Open. Thankfully, it’s easy to check the current NAT setting through the system’s network settings menu:
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then navigate to Profile & System
- Open Settings, then General, then Network settings
- Under Current Network Status, ensure that NAT Type is set to Open
If the NAT type is displaying anything other than Open, some troubleshooting will be in order. NAT Type: Unavailable will likely come down to individual router settings, UPnP settings in particular. On the other hand is Double NAT detected, which could appear for users running a router on top of a gateway provided by their ISP.
These two examples can be tricky to fix. Fortunately, the Xbox Support website has a detailed page explaining how to troubleshoot NAT errors. Generally speaking, the most common fix is to head into your router’s UPnP settings to refresh the NAT table. Since network hardware varies wildly, we aren’t able to provide specific steps. However, we do have tips on NAT type errors in Call of Duty: Warzone, or steps to follow if Black Ops Cold War party chat isn’t working.
By and large, Xbox error code 0x89231053 can be fixed be ensuring the system’s NAT type is set to open. If the console’s network status shows anything different, you may have to adjust your in-home router to get party chat working again.
