Age of Wonders 4: How to Build an Outpost and Found New Cities

Age of Wonders 4 lets you build new Outposts and cities to expand your territory, but figuring out the guidelines around where you can and can’t place them can be confusing. This guide will show you how to build outposts and cities.

How to build a City in Age of Wonders 4

To build a city in Age of Wonders 4, you’ll first need to find an outpost. Outposts can only be built by a Hero, and you’ll need enough gold. The amount of gold required varies, and Outposts also have a gold upkeep cost when constructed. You also won’t be able to build Outposts in a province next to another city or outpost.

Once you’ve built an Outpost, you can turn it into a City. This costs Imperium, which scales based on how many cities you already own. Additionally, you’ll want to be careful not to go over your City Cap. If you do, you’ll lose 25% of all resources produced by your City per City over the cap.

Therefore, you may want to hold off building Cities until you can support them. Outposts can be fortified and construct Workcamps to offer various benefits.

As you expand your territory with Outposts and Cities in Age of Wonders 4, you’ll increase the area where you can reliably heal your units.
