A War Thunder Switch release date would open the simulation game to a whole new audience. This free-to-play vehicular combat military title has been going for around a decade, after all. Many are wondering if it is coming out on Switch, so here’s everything we know.
Is War Thunder coming out on Switch?
War Thunder hasn’t been confirmed for a Switch release.
Developer Gaijin Entertainment has spoken about a Switch port a few times and has never given any concrete answer. It started in January 2018 when the War Thunder Twitter account joked that the port would happen once Nintendo gives the team “license to strap 7,5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone [an anti-tank gun] to Pikachus [sic] face.”
In March 2018, Gaijin CEO Anton Yudintsev stated that the Switch was an “interesting platform” and porting the engine is “technically possible.” However, he noted that the studio didn’t have any immediately plans for a port.
He was asked again February 2019 and said testing was underway.
“We have our SDK and development kits and we are currently testing various technical solutions of porting War Thunder’s engine to this console,” said Yudintsev.
Yudintsev spoke about it once again in October 2019 and gave a slightly more optimistic update.
“We recently launched one of our classic Dagor-based games on the Nintendo Switch (we didn’t begin with War Thunder),” said Yudintsev. “So the Switch Gaijin team has already started to work with the console.”
However, given that it has been around four years since that statement and there hasn’t been any whisperings of a Switch port, it seems unlikely.
Is there a War Thunder Switch release date?
There is no War Thunder Switch release date. And because it has been around four years since the War Thunder team has last spoken about it, it doesn’t seem like a Switch port of War Thunder is in the cards, especially this late into the console’s life cycle. Gaijin has ignored the Switch, but put the vehicular combat game on a whole host of platforms, most recently the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The game’s description reads:
