Starfield Can't Assign More Crew

Starfield Can’t Assign More Crew: How to Increase Max Outpost and Ship Crew Limit Cap

When you start Starfield, you’ll quickly find you can’t assign more crew. Your initial max outpost and ship crew limit is very low, and you’ll quickly run out of space. Unfortunately, increasing your max crew limit takes a while, so you’ll frequently have to leave companions behind.

How to increase max ship crew size in Starfield

When Starfield starts, your ship’s max crew size is three. Even if you add more crew slots by purchasing new modules, you’ll get the message, “You have reached the maximum number of crew assignments with your current ship command level.” So, no matter how large your vessel is, you’re stuck with a max of three crew members for quite a while.

To increase your max ship crew size, you have to invest at least 12 skill points in the Social skill tree to unlock Ship Command. Once you’ve done this, you can spend additional skill points to increase your ship’s max crew size.

More Starfield

There are four levels to the Ship Command skill:

  • Rank 1: You can have up to four active crew members.
  • Rank 2: You can have up to five active crew members.
  • Rank 3: You can have up to six active crew members.
  • Rank 4: You can have up to eight active crew members.

So, when fully upgraded, your max ship crew cap is eight. Remember, this is independent of the amount of crew slots on your vessel. No matter how many of these you have, you’ll only ever be able to have a max of eight members.

How to increase max outpost crew size in Starfield

When the game begins, you can assign up to three crew members to an outpost. Despite the game displaying the same message about reaching the maximum number of crew assignments with your current ship command level, increasing your max outpost crew size is handled by a different skill.

To increase your outpost crew cap in Starfield, you need to invest at least eight skill points in the Social tree to unlock Outpost Management. Then, you’ll have to spend three additional points to unlock Rank 3, which allows for additional crew to be assigned at outposts.
