Starfield Ship Interiors Missing Items

Starfield: Ship Interior Missing All Items Disappeared Bug

If you’ve returned to your ship in Starfield to find that all the items in the interior are missing, it might seem like a bug. After all, why else would every item in your ship disappear? Strangely, this is by design and not a bug at all. We’ll discuss why the items in your ship are missing and where they disappear to below.

Why did all the items in my ship disappear in Starfield?

When all the items in your ship go missing in Starfield, it’s because you’ve edited its layout. For some reason, if you move any modules around or add new ones, every item in the ship will be moved to your cargo bay. As far as we can tell, that only counts for things you’ve stored or placed in the interior. Any of the ambient items that come with a module disappear for good.

Fortunately, the items won’t be missing from your ship modules forever. You’ll have to wait a bit, but they’ll all regenerate if you don’t edit your layout again.

More Starfield

We don’t know why Bethesda decided to handle ship interiors this way, but we can make a guess. Likely, the game doesn’t treat each of your modules as its own entity and track the item placement within it. Instead, a new map is probably generated whenever you change your ship’s configuration. So, when you’re changing your vessel’s layout, you’re creating an entirely new area as far as the game is concerned.

Unfortunately, because of how the game handles ship interiors, it’s almost impossible to decorate your modules unless you’ve decided not to make any further changes to your layout. Fortunately, outposts and homes aren’t so complicated, and you can place items in them without worrying about them disappearing (though they are still glitchy occasionally).

Starfield ship missing items FAQ

Q: Why did the items inside my ship in Starfield vanish?

A: If you’ve altered your ship’s layout by moving modules or adding new ones, all items inside your ship are automatically transferred to your cargo bay. This design choice by the game ensures items aren’t lost during layout changes, though ambient items that come with a module will disappear permanently.

Q: Will the missing items from my ship modules return?

A: Yes, after some time, the items will regenerate inside your ship modules. However, to ensure they return, avoid making further edits to your ship’s layout during this period.

Q: Can I safely decorate my outposts and homes in Starfield without items disappearing?

A: While ship interiors pose challenges for item placement due to layout changes, outposts and homes are more stable. You can decorate them without items vanishing as frequently. However, be aware that they can occasionally exhibit glitches.
