Starfield Ending Explained

Starfield Ending Explained: Are There Multiple Endings?

The ending of Starfield is a bit confusing since it’s not technically the conclusion to your story. Given how open it is, many players will wonder if there are multiple endings or if a true ending will come in a future DLC. We’ll explain the conclusion of Starfield as it stands at the end of your first playthrough and what it might mean.

Is the ending of Starfield really the end of the game?

The confusing part about the end of Starfield is that it’s really just the beginning of a new game. Once you acquire all the Artifacts and put them into the Armillary, you can activate your grav drive to go to the Unity. Here, you find yourself, or at least a future version of yourself. You’ll be given a choice to either walk into the Unity to become a Starborn or turn away to return to your universe. Before you make a decision, you can also check out nearby scenes to see how your influence affected the galaxy.

When you proceed into the Unity, your current playthrough ends, the credits roll, and you start a new game. However, the game hasn’t really ended because your character stays aware of past events. If you choose, you can use this knowledge to play an abridged version of the main quest or to give yourself an advantage when revisiting content you completed previously. So, the end isn’t really the end, and it might just be the beginning.

Does Starfield have multiple endings?

The future version of you that you meet in the Unity implies that the ultimate goal of gathering the artifacts and building the Armillary is to one day meet the Creators. It’s hinted that there is an alien intelligence out there that made the artifacts and the Unity and that those who complete enough trips will eventually find them.

So, there are a few possibilities about how this could play out in the game:

  • Passing through the Unity enough times will trigger a different ending.
  • You can complete a different set of conditions to obtain an alternate ending.
  • Another ending will come in a future DLC.
  • This is just an in-universe way to explain New Game Plus.

We haven’t discovered which of these is true yet, but we’re leaning toward the first or second possibility being the case. The Starborn you meet allude to there being a different path than just passing into the Unity over and over. Additionally, Pete Hines hinted that “the game doesn’t really even get going until you finish the main quest.” So, we’re guessing we haven’t discovered the true ending yet.
