You will also grab gear by leveling up specific characters. Each fighter and Kameo has their own track of rewards that unlock more stuff as you hit new levels. The game only shows you what will be in the next few tracks, but these rewards will be specific to each character. For example, you will unlock Li Mei’s gear and skins through her track.
This is also the main way to unlock Brutalities and each character’s second Fatality. Fatalities don’t need to be unlocked first to be performed, but Brutalities do.
The next way is to get gear is to just spend Koins at the Dragon Shrine. This is located in the Extras menu. Paying the shrine 1,000 Koins will have it spit out something random. It is often a piece of concept art, as there are so many, but it will cough up a skin, palette, or gear item every so often.
Another way to earn gear is to play the Invasion mode. This is a solo RPG-like mode that cycles out every 60 days or so. These modes have exclusive gear in them that will presumably go away after the season ends (or end up on the store). The gear in Invasion is often spread out among chests and certain boss fights.
Some of the fights in Invasion do yield gear and skins, but many season-specific items can be found in the store, which has a few layers. One section of the store is dedicated to that season and takes Seasonal Kredits. Every main fighter has at least a few gear items and skins available for purchase. Getting everything will taken thousands upon thousands of Seasonal Kredits, so most players will have to choose wisely.
The other parts of the store take Dragon Krystals, which is the game’s premium currency. There is a feature section that contains a few items, and a rotating selection of skins and gear.
The final way to unlock gear in Mortal Kombat 1 is rank up in Kombat League, its online ranked mode. It hands out Seasonal Kredits, at least one portrait foreground or background, and a gear item for every rank. Players also get a whole skin every three ranks.
The tricky thing about this gear system in its current stage is that it doesn’t tell you where you can get a certain piece of gear. It also doesn’t even list out every gear item. Because of this, it’s impossible to see what exactly is on offer and how to attain it all. Some gear will likely disappear after each season (or be extremely hard to get). Towers also don’t seem to yield gear.
