Alan Wake 2 Out of Video Memory Error Message Fix

Is There an Alan Wake 2 Out of Video Memory Error Message Fix?

If you get an “Out of video memory” error message when launching Alan Wake 2 on PC, you’re probably ready for some trouble. These types of errors are usually followed by the game crashing, but that’s not the case here. Instead, you’ll notice the game loads as usual. So, is there a problem, or is this error message just a glitch?

Why am I getting an out of video memory error when launching Alan Wake 2 on PC?

Several times when launching Alan Wake 2, I’ve gotten an error message stating “Out of video memory: CreatePipelineState: due to lack of video memory.” This error doesn’t occur every time I launch the game, and it seems to have no effect on the game’s performance or stability. I have an RTX 4090, and I knew there was no way that the game was using 24 GB of VRAM, So I just ignored it. AW2 continues to run normally, and I’ve played for several hours after getting the error.

So, if you get the Out of video memory error, and you know there’s no way that’s true, you can continue to keep playing as usual. If you’re paranoid, you can quit out of the game and relaunch it, and it more than likely won’t pop up a second time.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any decent logs to diagnose what’s causing the issue. Without those, it’s impossible to know why this error is occurring. Fortunately, this one seems to be completely harmless and is just a small annoyance that will hopefully be patched out soon.

There are some more severe issues with the game crashing and a particularly nasty, game-breaking bug. However, it’s been stable for the most part, and performance has been better than expected. So, keep an eye out for updates to smooth out some of the rough edges we’re dealing with at launch.
