There are other ways to earn free event currency for digging mini-games. There are free gifts in the in-game store and three daily Quick Wins objectives. Some rewards in the list of milestones itself have a few laser guns, and sometimes hitting an empty space on the grid will reveal a bonus laser gun or two.
