Well, that took long enough.
The Skyrim Script Extender, typically abbreviated SKSE, has finally been released as a separate entry on Steam after nearly four years. But unless you've modded The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim before, you probably have little idea what the hell I'm talking about.
Essentially, it's a tool created by a team of three developers that replaces the usual Skyrim executable and allows for numerous Skyrim mods to function properly. One such mod is SkyUI, which I recommend since it makes Skyrim's user interface tolerable.
A few other mods that require SKSE are the Skyrim -Community- Uncapper that allows your skills to move past 100, RaceMenu for better character creation, and iHud that lets you toggle HUD elements on and off. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
You will need to enable Steam's in-game overlay for SKSE to work straight from your Steam library, though you may manually launch skse_loader instead. The main benefit of launching it from Steam is that it will automatically update to the latest version of SKSE, which helps when it comes to making sure all of your mods are compatible with each other.
So if you ever plan on playing Skyrim again, and especially you've never installed any mods before, make sure you download this as well as any of those brilliant mods. (I think I'm going to have to clear a weekend or two…)
