Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Open-World Is Roughly 5300 Acres, Or 1.5 Skyrim Maps

It's become clear from the hands-on previews of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that its world is massive. But just how large is it?

A user on Reddit by the name noob10 has spent some time evaluating Breath of the Wild's map size. After factoring the time needed to travel from one side of the map to the other, the speed of travel, in addition to how much of the map can actually be visited, he came up with a final number that sounds as probable as it is impressive.

The final output was 836.1 square minutes of travel, which equates to 5,300 acres. At this size, Breath of the Wild is 1/4 the size of Manhattan, or 1.5 times the size of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's world. To put it more simply, it is one of the largest single-player open worlds ever crafted.

Although I can't say for certain that these numbers are accurate, in my experience the world can really only be compared to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in terms of being a healthy balance of size, variety, and level of detail. There are lots of interesting secrets to discover all over the place, making each acre feel like it matters instead of just trying to create an inflated number.
