Breakaway Canceled in Latest Blow for Amazon Game Studios

Breakaway has been canceled by Amazon Game Studios, with the online retailer’s game publishing arm suffering a sizeable setback after canning one of its three planned releases. The brawler, which was being brought to life by Killer Instinct season one developer Double Helix Games, was in alpha though has been brought to an end by Amazon after failing to gain much traction.

Double Helix announced that the game had been canceled on Reddit, and while the team didn’t rule out that a potential return to the beat ’em up in the future, it is now working on new projects. A statement from the developer posted to the official Breakaway website reads:

“Hi Everyone,

We wanted to inform you about an important change to our plans for Breakaway.

As you know, Breakaway was in Public Alpha from June to the end of September. It’s thrilling to play and co-design the game with this fantastic community. Your passion is one of the reasons we believe so strongly in Breakaway.

Over the course of the Alpha we received a lot of feedback from you that we’re taking to heart. In order to get it right, we’re letting our team take the time to iterate and evolve Breakaway’s core gameplay to deliver what you’ve asked for.  We aren’t sure how long this will take, but we think it’s the right thing to do for the game, and you, the community.

We won’t be hosting Alpha matches during this time, but we’re still listening for your ideas on how to improve the game in the community Discord and subreddit. Watch this space for updates on how we plan to address your feedback.

Thanks again for your continued passion!

The Breakaway Team”

As one of three planned releases from Amazon Game Studios, Breakaway being canned is bad news for the publisher. The Fortune 500 company has since removed all mention of the game from its website, with it now only referencing the upcoming MMO New World and the third-person survival game Crucible. These games are still in development.
