Lack of PlayStation Cross-Play Frustrates Bethesda

Bethesda has joined in with the many developers frustrated with Sony for not allowing cross-platform play on PS4. Sony caught flak this time over The Elder Scrolls: Legends, a card game being published by Bethesda Softworks. The Japanese company currently does not allow for any players on its platform to play multiplayer games with those on other consoles.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Pete Hines, the senior vice president of marketing and communication for Bethesda, brought up these concerns and frustrations. Hines mentioned that Fallout 76 would be the more logical game to argue with Sony over cross-platform play. However, he noted that for The Elder Scrolls: Legends such a feature is more “pertinent” and that it would not be “critical” for the Fallout game to have it.

He argued that it is key for the Elder Scrolls card game to have this ability as cross-platform progression, specifically across mobile, PC, and consoles, is key to the game’s design. He also added that the ability to play continuous matches across different hardware “is a must for us on any platform,” calling it a “bad situation” if they start segmenting their audience on certain platforms.

This is not the first time Sony has come under fire for not allowing cross-platform play on the PS4. Sony most famously blocked Fortnite players from playing against each other across consoles and did not allow them to carry their progression from the PS4 to the Xbox One or Switch. It also forced players to recreate their Epic accounts for the game if they wanted to play the game on any other system.  This issue also occurred with Rocket League which supports cross-play on all hardware, except for the PS4, which only supports PS4 and PC cross-play.

Elder Scrolls: Legends is available currently for mobile devices and PC, with Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch versions coming later this year.
