Biggest Disappointment 2012

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City – Biggest Disappointment 2012

Platform(s): PS3, Xbox 360

Publisher: Capcom

Developer: Slant Six Games

A certain segment of fans would have you believe that Mass Effect 3 was the biggest disappointment in 2012, but we're here to spell it out for you. Mass Effect 3's fanboys are not part of the game. Don't let them keep you from finishing the fight against the Reapers. In fact, I recommend you do that well before you play Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

In fact, I recommend you do a lot of things before you play Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Get a physical. Learn to cook a nice dinner. Get into a drunken fight outside a sleazy bar. Go jogging. Seriously, any of these things is better than Operation Raccoon City's awkward, unintelligible, and poorly balanced brand of human-on-human-on-zombie violence.

A disappointment isn't just a bad game, though. Operation Raccoon City had a lot of promise in the months leading up to launch. The concept of bleeding your human opponent so that the zombie horde finishes the job seemed truly compelling. Resident Evil has always had style to spare, so a multiplayer shooter that turned the zombies into a tool seemed like a match made in heaven.

Regrettably, Operation Raccoon City proved too dark, too messy, and too uneven for a truly competitive multiplayer game. The campaign was mostly comprised of offline multiplayer skirmishes and graphical glitches and other bugs made the game frustrating to play. If that's not a disappointment, I don't know what is.
