Fumito Ueda created iconic games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian. Shadow of the Colossus remains popular even today, as the success of its remastered version proved earlier this year. Now we all have something new to anticipate from the veteran developer. We have received official confirmation that Fumito Ueda’s next game is currently in development at his genDesign studio.
In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu (as translated by Gematsu), Ueda revealed that his next game will be a brand new title and not a sequel to any of his past games. That certainly seems to be in line with Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, which were all completely new IPs when they were released. The title will only be the second game to be developed by Fumito Ueda’s genDesign studio. Ueda previously worked at Sony for both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Ueda reassures gamers that his new game will be similar in scale to that of his previous games. It is currently in very early development, as he also reveals that the developers are at a stage where they’re testing interesting ideas and prototyping them. The challenge for Ueda and his studio this time around is to work on all the “core parts” before trying to make it into a stable product.
“What we’re making now doesn’t feel like an indie game,” he said. “We’re ultimately aiming for something on the scale of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.”
However, we might not be seeing this new game for a while yet. For example, The Last Guardian took almost a decade to eventually launch from its original announcement. As of now, we still have no idea of what’s in store from Ueda and the folks at genDesign studio. The featured image in this article could be our only clue, as it was initially released alongside the studio’s New Year 2018 message in January.
