Square Enix announced console ports of Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, itself a mobile port of Final Fantasy XV, last week. Pocket Edition HD is now available on Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. The game condenses the full story of Final Fantasy XV into a new art style with a different battle system. Unlike the mobile release of Pocket Edition, which is split into chapters ranging from $0.99 to $3.99 per chapter, Pocket Edition HD is a single purchase. Here’s the launch trailer for the game.
We thought the original Final Fantasy XV was a strong game, rating it highly in our review. We praised the combat system, graphics, and world, but felt the characters were lacking. The chibi-fied Pocket Edition loses some of the grand production values of the original, and the great combat, but seems like a great way to experience the game’s story.
Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Versus XIII way back in 2006. That game gestated in development until it was re-revealed as XV at E3 2013. The game was released in 2016, and was widely regarded as being unfinished. Since its initial release, Square Enix has released a myriad of story expansions and updates to address issues with the game.
Pocket Edition released on iOS, Android, and Windows with many of the game’s main storyline updates intact. The different character-led “episodes” have not made the jump to the Pocket Edition, and as of now there are no public plans to bring them over. The game’s art style was divisive when it was revealed, but overall it was warmly received by many for its simplified combat and increased tempo.
