Crytek Discusses Vigil Acquisition, Darksiders III Not Currently Planned

Last week, Crytek announced that they were opening a new studio in Texas that would be home to the former THQ studio, Vigil Games. The Darksiders developer was not purchased at the THQ auction, which came as a surprise to Crytek, so they jumped at the opportunity to snatch up some additional talent after the dust had settled.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told GamesBeat:

We were surprised when nobody bid on Vigil. We would have liked to have bid, but there were too many unknowns. But when nobody bid [on Vigil], I thought that maybe we could reconsider bidding.

But eventually we decided not to because the projects [the developer was working on] weren’t strategically fit for us, but I really liked David [when I talked to him] on the phone. He made a very good impression on me as someone who really cared, someone who is really passionate about what he does, and someone who is passionate about the team he works with.

Yerli went out to visit Vigil founder David Adams and was blown away by the dedication and commitment found within his team. “And when they all showed up and expressed that they really wanted to work togetherthat team integrity and the fact that they really didn’t want to split up was enough for me to say this goes beyond an interview," Yerli explained.

This, however, does not mean that we'll be seeing Darksiders III in the near future, as Yerli made it clear that right now, it "doesn’t fit with our strategy." Perhaps one day we'll see a third installment running on Crytek's gorgeous graphics engine, but in the meantime we'll just have to remain patient.
