Smash Ultimate stage builder mode accidentally revealed by Nintendo

Nintendo may have just accidentally revealed some upcoming content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The latest TV commercial for the game seems to show that the Stage Builder from previous titles is coming to Smash Ultimate.

The accidental reveal happens during the opening moments of the 30-second TV spot. The shot shows part of the Smash Ultimate main menu on screen behind a Switch with a new menu item. While the text on this new menu item is a bit out of focus, it does seem to say “Stage Builder.”

The Stage Builder was a mode first introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Using the mode, players could create custom stages from a selection of default stage parts. They could also use any of the stage music from the game for their custom stages.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U greatly improved on Stage Builder. It gave players more freedom in creating stages as they could draw platforms of any size or shape using the touch screen on the Wii U’s GamePad.

Both games allowed players to share and download custom stages over the internet. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, however, tied this feature to the Miiverse, and as such can no longer be used since the service was shut down.

With the mode being a prominent part of the two previous games, Smash Ultimate not having Stage Builder at launch is quite the omission. However, the TV spot does seem to indicate that the mode is coming.

The question then is if the footage of the game in the TV spot is from a new internal build of Smash Ultimate or if it’s just a mockup. If it turns out to be the former, then it is possible that Stage Builder is one of the things coming in Smash Ultimate‘s version 3.0 update this Spring.

In the meantime, check out the new commercial below.
