Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer showcases ‘a new speed of hero’

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer has been released. The movie is a mix of live-action characters and a CGI Sonic. The trailer gives us our first look at the speedy furred hero in action alongside Jim Carrey’s Dr Robotnik. Sonic is voiced by comic actor Ben Schwartz in this movie. He will be accompanied by James Marsden (X-Men, Westworld) as his live-action accomplice named Tom Wachowski.

The trailer gives a taste of the movie’s story. It appears Sonic will find himself on the wrong side of the law, with Dr Robotnik starting off as an advisor to the police. As the trailer hurtles towards its conclusion, we finally see some action from Sonic and mischief from Dr Robotnik. Sonic sets off leaving a blue blur in his wake, he then takes on some of Dr Robotnik’s mechanical minions. The trailer features a shot of Dr Robotnik appearing to be piloting his signature flying ship.

The tone of the trailer seems to peg this movie firmly as a comedy. The clip is, seemingly ironically, soundtracked by Coolio’s Gangster’s Paradise. The trailer concludes with a joke about “body spray and an old ham sandwich.” With regards to characters, Jim Carrey appears to be playing a very witty and wise-cracking Dr Robotnik. Whereas Sonic the Hedgehog comes across as extremely chirpy and childlike.

Yesterday, we got our first look at Carrey as Dr Robotnik via a leak of the first trailer. The leak included the signature shot of Robotnik from the trailer. The build-up to the first real look at the movie has focused a lot on Sonic’s appearance. Fans have debated the prospect of a more live-action-like furry version of the character ever since some teases and leaks showed off his new look.

Sonic the Hedgehog is slated for release in the US on November 8. You can watch the full trailer below.
