Players who have yet to play the expansion can now purchase Final Fantasy 14 Heavensward free of charge. Square Enix is giving away both the PC and Mac versions of the expansion on their online store.
Released back in 2015, Final Fantasy 14 Heavensward expanded Square Enix’s MMORPG by adding a three new job classes and increasing the level cap. It also added a number of new areas, each being about three times as large as the zones in the original Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn. Finally, it also brought in three new PVP modes.
Once players reached level 30 in Heavensward, they will be able to gain access to the Dark Knight, Machinist, and Astrologian job classes. Square Enix gave these new job classes their own story lines that were connected to the new setting.
Heavensward brought with it the Feast, Seal Rock (Seize), and Fields of Glory (Shatter) PvP modes. The Feast sees groups of four players compete in an arena, racking up medals by taking them from other players. Seal Rock (Seize) has players compete to capture and protect randomly spawning resources nodes on the map. Fields of Glory (Shatter) on the other hand has players destroying objects in the battlefield for points.
Following its release, Square Enix has since put out a second expansion titled Stormblood. Meanwhile, the company will release a third expansion called Shadowbringers on July 2. Square Enix has likely released Heavensward for free to help players catch up before the latter expansion lands in-game.
Any lapsed players looking to pick up Heavensward through this promotion should note that these are not the Steam versions. This means that they need the non-Steam version of the base Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn on either PC or Mac for these to work. Players on Steam will have to buy Stormblood as it includes Heavensward with it.
