Phoenix Labs has finally revealed the Dauntless release date. The free-to-play monster hunting game arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 21, 2019.
Dauntless‘ developers have had the game in beta on PC for some time via the PlayDauntless website. When it finally launches on PC however, it will release as an Epic Games Store exclusive. On the other hand, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases were announced during the Game Awards last year. All three versions should have the same content when the game launches.
As part of its launch, Dauntless will come with a number of recent updates added during the beta. This includes the new Mastery System that which provides a mastery card for each unique weapon and behemoth. Also included at launch will be the recent captain rework. This substantial update changed a number of things with the campaign while also providing a new “End of Hunt” screen with more information for slayers.
The game’s launch will also bring “Hunt Pass Season 5: Hidden Blades.” This adds the “Blossom Moon Festival” which lets slayers earn some ninja-themed gear. This is in addition to the 50 new levels of content for basic and elite tracks, as with the four previous Hunt Pass seasons.
Aside from being free-to-play, Dauntless differentiates itself from games like Monster Hunter: World with its unique setting. The game takes place on a series of floating islands called the “Shattered Isles.” These provide a unique and dangerous setting compared to its more earthbound competitors.
The game’s campaign also provides a much more compelling reason to hunt monsters, or “Behemoths” as the game calls them. Behemoths are monsters who actually threaten the world of Dauntless as opposed to merely roaming around within it.
All of this is wrapped up in a more stylized look reminiscent of Overwatch or Fortnite. This helps give Dauntless a unique identity of its own, despite hewing pretty close to the framework laid out by Monster Hunter. Be on the lookout for the Dauntless release date later this month.
