E3 First Impressions: Frogger 3D

Atari was tucked between a mass of AAA titles and new majorly developed IPs, showing off new entries in some classic franchises. The most true incarnation of a classic game I've seen in a while was on the floor: Frogger, baby. Cross that street!

The gameplay is as classic as possible, just a "get from point A to point B" across traffic and obstacle course. Cars zoom from every direction in every lane (even causing a major – awesome – car crash on the very first level) with the occasional tweak in speed and timing to keep things interesting. The 3D effect is nice, not too painful and gives some nice depth to the environments.

Throughout the level, coins can be collected for both a boost in score and in unlocking additional content. It's nothing too major, just in-game art and concept artwork from what I was told, but if in the final version new modes or anything are available, this could be a bad-ass flashback that the old-school needs. Only time will tell.

Frogger 3D should be out in Fall 2011. Hop to it, Konami!
