Death Note Netflix Series Announced With Stranger Things Creators

A Death Note Netflix series has been revealed as an upcoming live-action project by the creators of Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers. Few details have emerged about the series, but hopefully it’ll avoid issues fans of the anime had with the 2017 Netflix live-action movie adaptation.

What we know so far about the Death Note Netflix series

Death Note Netflix Series

This new Death Note television series will likely come after the fifth and final season of Stranger Things as that will be The Duffer Brothers’ “first order of business,” according to Deadline. Netflix had created a live-action film adaptation of the anime in 2017 directed by Adam Wingard and starring Nat Wolff and Willem Dafoe (as the voice behind Ryuuk). However, it was poorly received by critics and fans alike, with a 37% critic score and 23% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Luckily, this upcoming series will “be an entirely new take.”

There is no confirmed release date for the series yet. But if the speculation that the Stranger Things season 5 release date will be mid-2024 is true, it will likely take at least a few years before this new adaptation will release. And that’s being optimistic, since Deadline also reveals that The Duffer Brothers have many other projects in the works: an original series with creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, a stage play set in the Stranger Things universe, a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman, and a live-action Stranger Things spin-off.

For a short summary of the Death Note anime, it’s originally based on a manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba about a smart but idle teenager named Light who comes into possession of a black notebook that mysteriously kills anyone whose name is written in its pages. This supernatural book was dropped by a bored death god named Ryuuk who becomes fascinated by how Light uses it. But absolute power corrupts absolutely, as they say, and it’s not before long until a detective named L attempts to uncover Light as the self-righteous murderer he believes him to be.

In other news, the God of War Ragnarok pre-order date and Collector’s Editions have been announced for PS5 and PS4, and Games With Gold will end free Xbox 360 games later this year.
