MultiVersus Founder’s Packs Make It the Top-Selling US Game for July 2022

MultiVersus may well be a free-to-play title but it has become the best-selling game in the US for July 2022 purely through sales of its Founder’s Packs, managing to knock Elden Ring off the top spot for the month. Other new entries into the top 20 included Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and the much-delayed Digimon Survive.

How does a free-to-play game become a best-selling game?

MultiVersus Best-Selling US Game

MultiVersus may be free-to-play but it offers Founder’s Pack packages that come with extra in-game goodies. One of those goodies is character tokens that allow players to instantly unlock new characters and they’re currently the quickest way to accumulate a decent roster of characters. The Founder’s Packs also allowed players to access the open beta on Xbox, PS5, PS4, and PC before the game became free-to-play. As the Founder’s Packs include the game itself, they count as game sales for the purpose of the NPD data used to compile the charts. However, as the packs will be removed before the end of Season 1 in November, the game isn’t expected to be in the chart for many more months.

Other notable new entries include Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Digimon Survive. The former is notable for entering the charts at #4 despite its digital sales through the Nintendo eShop not being included in the figures; if they were, the game could have been positioned above Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in #2 and #3 respectively. The latter dropped into #8 despite only being available for two days before the chart was compiled. The 20 top-selling games in the US for the month of July 2022 are as follows:

  1. MultiVersus
  2. Elden Ring
  3. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
  4. Xenoblade Chronicles 3
