Two-Player Fencing Game Nidhogg Is Much More Than It Seems, Out Now On Steam

The trailer above signals Nidhogg's long-awaited release on PC via Valve's Steam platform, but for those that haven't been watching the indie development scene until recently it might seem like an oddball new Atari game.

Nidhogg's premise is pretty simple. You take control of one fencer and try to make it to the next screen, by any means necessary. That means throwing your sword at the opponent to stab him through the gut or getting a face-stab off a crazy miss-match.

Players can also jump and dodge their opponent, pick up weapons off the ground, and generally pull of low-fi acrobatics to meet their objectives.

When you're playing with another person (as I did with an NES control pad at GDC 2011), Nidhogg's competitive nature takes over. It's not enough to run past your opponent; you'll want to embarass them with a feat of fencing strength and agility. Any single moment can make or break your campaign against the opposition.

There's a lot more going on in Nidhogg now than there was back at the Game Developers Conference almost three years ago now. We'll get our hands on Nidhogg in the coming days and deliver a review and report card on this stylish indie game. Click here to buy the game on Steam now.
