There’s a possibility that Xbox Live Gold may be getting killed off in favor of another service, according to a recent rumor. It should be pointed out, however, that this has not yet been confirmed at the time of writing.

What is happening to Xbox Live Gold?

The information comes from video game journalist and Twitter user Benji-Sales, who says that Xbox Live Gold is being shut down come September 1, with the new service being put in its place.

The tweet goes on to say that Game Pass Core will be the same price as Gold, and will include multiplayer functionality and around 25 Game Pass titles. It’s also been suggested that “free games with Gold is ending.”

Benji-Sales links back to a report from the Korean website Xbox Cafe, which has some alleged leaked screenshots showing what the new Core package will contain.

When translated, the information in the article says that “all existing Gold subscribers will be converted to Core,” and any games purchased through Xbox Live Gold will still remain on people’s accounts.

Interestingly, Xbox Cafe also links back to a report from Windows Central. Unfortunately, this post has since been deleted, so it’s difficult to know whether this entire rumor is true or not.

We need to reiterate that none of this has been confirmed by Microsoft or anyone officially associated with Xbox. It’s possible, according to the tweet from Benji-Sales, that an announcement could be made soon.

For now, we can’t say for certain whether Xbox Live Gold is being discontinued in favor of this new Core subscription service. We need to wait for Microsoft or Xbox to confirm whether this is actually going forward or not.
