Metal Gear Franchise Reaches 60 Million in Worldwide Sales

While the future of the Metal Gear series remains unknown, the franchise on the whole has now reached a milestone in terms of sales.

Going all the way back to 1987

According to figures posted by Konami (as spotted by VGChartz), the Metal Gear games have moved an impressive 60 million units worldwide. The series was well on its way to achieving this number, with 59.3 million copies sold as of November 2022.

It’s hard to imagine a world without Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid. Although fans around the globe have all but lost interest in the series since Hideo Kojima left Konami in 2015, the games that do bear his name have gone down as classics.

Kojima was responsible for not only creating the series, but for popularizing the stealth genre in video games. The first Metal Gear, released in July 1987, made tactical and espionage-inspired gameplay mechanics a possibility.

Metal Gear Solid, which came out in September 1998 on the original PlayStation, popularized the franchise even further, securing Kojima’s place as a household name in the industry.

The series isn’t completely dead, of course. We now know that Metal Gear Solid 3 is getting a remake, which is called Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This modern take on the 2004 classic is set to release in 2024 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Unfortunately, Kojima won’t be involved with the remake, but it’ll still be interesting to see Metal Gear make a comeback in some form, even if it’s not a new game.
