Spotify just rolled out a new feature that has fans buzzing. It gives users a fresh way to connect without leaving the app. The update appeared in the platform’s latest announcement and teased a tool that makes sharing and chatting about favorites easier than ever.
Here’s what we know about how it works, who can use it, and what it means for listeners worldwide.
Spotify introduces DM feature on its application, for users to chat
Spotify has launched Messages, a direct messaging feature that lets users share music, podcasts, and audiobooks within the app.
On August 26, 2025, Spotify will roll out Messages to Free and Premium users aged 16+ in select markets. The feature lets users chat one-on-one with text and emojis, while storing shared content in a dedicated inbox under the profile icon.
Spotify explained, “Friends and family share their favorite music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more from Spotify millions of times each month. That’s because word of mouth is one of the most powerful ways for people to discover their next favorite track.” Spotify said users asked for a dedicated space to share and revisit recommendations, and the feature centralizes sharing that often happens on WhatsApp, Instagram, or SMS.
The function works by tapping the share icon in the Now Playing view, selecting a contact, and hitting send. Users can share with people they’ve previously interacted with through Jams, Blends, Collaborative Playlists, or shared Spotify plans. According to Spotify, “Messages are a fast and convenient way to share and chat about what you’re listening to with the people you care about.”
Security features include the option to accept or reject message requests, block users, report content, or opt out entirely. Spotify confirmed, “Users have the choice to accept or reject message requests from friends and family,” adding that conversations are protected with “industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest.” The platform will also use proactive detection to scan for unlawful or harmful content while moderators review reports.
Spotify said Messages complement integrations with TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, adding, “This is just the beginning. We’re excited to continue building and refining the experience for more Spotify users around the globe in the months ahead.”
