OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will introduce an ‘erotica’ feature for verified adult users. The introduction of the feature brings a significant change to the chatbot, notable for its restrictive features. Altman’s announcement comes two months after he shared in an interview that the company hadn’t installed an AI sexbot in the chatbot.
ChatGPT will soon have an erotica feature for adults
Sam Altman stated on X (formerly Twitter) that an erotica feature and other new features will make their way to ChatGPT.
The entrepreneur first addressed ChatGPT’s restrictions, noting OpenAI was being careful with “mental health issues.” He added that the company realized the restrictions made ChatGPT “less useful/enjoyable” for users without mental health problems. “But given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right,” he further stated.
Altman explained that OpenAI could now “safely relax the restrictions in most cases” as they had new tools at their disposal and could “mitigate the serious mental health issues.”
He then revealed that OpenAI planned to launch a new version of ChatGPT in a few weeks. According to Altman, this version has a personality and behavior very similar to what people enjoyed about 4o. The Loopt founder expressed his hope that the personality would be better than that of 4o.
“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing),” he further shared.
Altman concluded his statement by revealing that OpenAI would roll out age-gating “more fully” in December. He also confirmed that “erotica” would be allowed for “verified adults” as part of the company’s “treat adult users like adults” principle.
Reacting to the news, an X (formerly Twitter) user called it, “AI glowup.”
Altman’s statement comes two months after he revealed in an interview with Cleo Abram that they had not installed a sexbot. Further, it comes around the same time after the parents of a 16-year-old Adam Raine sued the company, alleging ChatGPT contributed to his suicide.
OpenAI previously teased the erotica feature in February 2025. In the Model Spec page, the company revealed they were exploring ways to let users/developers generate erotica and gore in age-appropriate contexts, as long as usage policies were met. However, the company clarified that it would set a limit against potentially harmful content like sexual deepfakes and revenge porn.
