Ubisoft Officially Cancels the ‘Prince of Persia’ Remake

Fans of the classic video game franchise, Prince of Persia, might want to look away as Ubisoft has officially canceled the remake of The Sands of Time iteration. The French video game publisher is currently going through a massive reorganization of the company, which has led to the abandonment of multiple in-development games, including The Sands of Time remake.

Ubisoft announces cancellation of ‘Prince of Persia’ remake

On January 21, the official social media account of Prince of Persia shocked its fanbase by confirming that the upcoming Sands of Time remake has been canceled.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We know this is deeply disappointing. The game carries enormous meaning for fans and for the teams who worked on it,” the X (formerly Twitter) update read.

The team also explained why it had to settle on such an unfortunate decision, writing, “While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would’ve required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit. And we didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents.”

The news about the scrapping of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake comes in the wake of Ubisoft’s upheaval of the entire organization. According to Variety, the company has sanctioned the layoffs of a significant faction of employees.

Additionally, the gaming industry giant is also reshaping how it will handle all operations by establishing five ‘Creative Houses.’ The plan is to allocate a specific creative genre to each division. Ubisoft has already launched Vantage Studios as its first subsidiary, with more such announcements likely to follow.

Despite the cancellation of The Sands of Time remake, Prince of Persia will continue to exist as an IP under Ubisoft. “Prince of Persia as a universe and a legacy continues to matter deeply to us, and this decision does not mean we’re stepping away from the franchise,” the aforementioned update mentioned.
