“We’re in for a great game!” Review

“We’re in for a great game!”

Do you know what the most popular sport in the world is?? Well it’s not football, at least not what we call football, it’s soccer. And VR Soccer is the best video representation of the sport that you can buy. FIFA 96, and Goalstrom were both solid games, but they are blown out of the water by VR Soccer.

The game is played on a 3-D field, how it looks depends on which one of the six available camera angles you choose. Actually, the game includes what they call ‘Virtual FieldVision’ which lets you watch the action from any angle you like, including a first person perspective looking through the soccer player’s eyes!

The players are all polygonal, and are amazingly detailed, right down to the numbers on the uniforms. The graphics are very well done, but not necessarily much better than other soccer games. However, the camera angles give it a definite edge over the competition.

Learning the control is basic if not a no brainier, and to top it all off the game has a training option to let you do drills. Other modes of play include friendly, league, and world cup modes. Players can choose from 44 international teams, each with their real players and statistics.

The players themselves are accurately represented by there skill level. For example, defensive players usually have better control of the ball while offensive players have faster speed. Some may criticize that the lack of complexity in the controls makes the game worse. I, on the other hand, like the simplicity of it. To steal the ball you don’t have to press any buttons you simply run up to the player who has the ball.

On screen you have a radar to let you know how many players stand between you and the goal. And while your busy dodging the defense, your every move is accounted for by an authentic British commentator! He knows the names of all the players, and sounds like he might actually be announcing the game on the ‘telly’. He adds some great realism to the game, but my only problem with him was his lack of enthusiasm when a goal was scored. The crowd noise is fabulous as they chant for there favorite team, and they increase their pitch if a goal is about to be scored.

Not to insult Goalstorm or FIFA 96, but if you like Soccer buy VR Soccer first, and rent the other two later!!
