Having languished on the backburner after buying some cars for restoration, I set some cash aside that wasn't allocated to car parts and finally built my rig. Guts are as follows:

Coolermaster Storm Stryker
ASRock Z77 Professional (honestly had no idea Fatal1ty was a person, not just a brand, like "Vengeance", and feel a little foolish when I see his mug on my boot screen every time.)
Intel Core i7 2600k w/ stock cooler for now. Will go Noctua when the OC bug gets too strong (would have gone Ivy Bridge but my familiarity with Sandy was greater)
8GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 (expanding to 16 next month because, why not?)
EVGA Geforce GTX 670SC (couldn't justify an extra $140 for the 680)
Coolermaster Silent Pro 1000W PSU (for when the SLI bug bites)
1TB standard SATA drive
Dual DVD burner drives

Monitor is just a 24" Dell LCD, so I don't hit eye popping resolution numbers, and am able to run BF3 maxed. If I were on a bigger screen I imagine that would rapidly change. Currently using the wireless Logitech mouse stolen from my laptop and a 10 yr+ keyboard that was just lying around the house.

In hindsight there was no reason NOT to go with an Ivy, like the 3770. It has a 100mhz faster turbo, is compatible with my board, cost the same as my 2600k to the penny, and even runs cooler. Still only seeing core temps of about 45 (ambient is about 29 in the upstairs office) during BF3 multiplayer. Darthmod Empire Total War and Shogun 2 don't really punish it much more, and the highest my GPU temps have hit is approx. 72. Bit higher than I'd like, but still well within safe, especially livable since it's doing it with stock cooling.

Have X-Dock functionality if I ever want an SSD, and due to sales, monitor excluded, the whole build came to just a little over $1.5K. If I can get photobucket to remember me any time soon I'll put some pics up. Got a nice before and after of the wiring before I tamed everything with judicious application of zip-ties.

(And yes, only 5 YEARS after it came out, I finally have a machine that runs Crysis. My poor old QX6700 dual 8800GTX me and my dad built back then just BARELY missed being able to run it maxed. It also doubled as an efficient space heater in the winter... Now I did it cheaper, faster, and MUCH cooler. Plus, y'know, this one lives with me and the wife, not my dad, so there's that Cool )

$1500 seems overpriced for what you got, but...you should enjoy it.

It really isn't...Try pricing that stuff sometime.

Looks like a good build that should last you quite a while. Probably didn't need that big of a PSU even if you want to add another 670 down the road, but it all works in the end.

If you don't count the $200 for Windows 7, it's more in the $1300 ballpark. I always overdo it on PSUs though. I'd like to say there's a good reason, but I'm really just paranoid about my power supplies. I also had to buy everything, didn't have any parts left from other builds I could really use, apart from peripherals.

No doubt there's a combination of hardware that would get me the same fps for less (i5, for example) but I like the way the i7 handles 3DS and such.

The GeForce 670 is the way to go. From what I've read it overclocks like a champ and it gives you to most bang for our buck. If you'r just using your computer for gaming though I don't know why you didn't go with the 2500k.

Try to forgive the quality. These were all iPhone pics, and they're not in a particular order. (Also, I think one of the Malamutes had licked my phone that night, everything's blurrier than usual)

And as far as the processor goes, I run 3D Studio Max to roughly mock up cars before I start hacking them up to guess clearances when I build over summer break, and I've never seen anything tear through renders like a 2600K. (helped me convince a friend an RB36 would NOT be a direct drop in for his S14 240SX just using a simple box with the motor's dimensions and a model of his front clip) Next semester when we get into Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis in my degree program, the extra horsepower's going to come in handy for homework projects.

Tell him to go RB25. Much easier to fit and still very powerful in an S-chassis, with the bonus of being a hell of a lot cheaper to buy in the first place.

Nice build man, now all you need to do is get yourself a new mouse Wink

Wow! Fucking sweet! I love the (mostly) white look you got going on there. Kick the shit out of Apple while you're at it.

Hating on Apple will make me cool in here right? Sad

We already think you're cool, dan <3

And i too love the colour scheme going on. It has a side window, right? All you need to do is swap out the front fans and you can get a white/red theme going.
