Blizzard Pays Homage to Overwatch Fan Who Died Before The Game’s Release

Wu Hongyu (Chinese name: 吴宏宇), a 20-year old unversity student and Overwatch fan, heroically passed away on May 23, 2016, one day before the game's launch.

According to a translation by Reddit user czhihong, Hongyu witnessed a thief stealing a schoolmate's motorbike while on campus and followed the thief on a bike. However, the two bikes soon collided. Hongyu suffered "severe internal bleeding from head injuries" and passed away at the hospital. But due to his actions, the thief was later apprehended.

A translation of a group chat Hongyu had with his friends reveals that he was looking forward to the launch of Overwatch and was also a fan of Captain America. As a tribute, Hongyu's name has been added to one of the space suits (picture above) displayed in Lijiang Tower in the Control Center map.

Hongyu has also been awarded with a "Courageous Citizen" award by the Guangzhou city government, according to a report by NetEase.
