Assassin’s Creed 3 DLC Will Be Non-Canon, Ubi Doesn’t Want To Splinter Audience

If you've read any of my opinion-heavy work here on GR, then you're likely aware of the fact that I'm not a huge fan of downloadable content. As such, it brings me great pleasure to share with you the news that all of the DLC for Assassin's Creed 3 will not be canon.

Why is this so awesome you ask? Well for one, it means that those who don't want to shell out the cash for the extra content will still get the entire story of Assassin's Creed 3 right out of the box. This also means that Ubisoft can go completely off the wall with alternate history without fear of screwing up the future of the franchise.

Of course, these are just my thoughts. How about I let lead designer Steve Masters—who recently had a chat with OXM—explain the reasoning behind Ubisoft's decision:

For me, the DLC has always been a touchy thing for putting important story moments into. Ultimately it fractures the audience and makes it really difficult for people to keep up with what is the canon of the series.

For us, we want to have a little fun with it and have a less serious experience, a less earnest experience, and setting it in an alternate history environment gives us room and freedom to play around with things in a more whimsical manner. We think people are going to enjoy it, have fun with it – we’ve just got to remember it’s not part of the canon, it’s just there as something for players to enjoy.

So basically everything I just said. Glad we're on the same page, Ubi.
