Death Stranding no longer a PS4 exclusive, official list suggests

Is Death Stranding no longer a PS4 exclusive? Well, an update to an official Sony list might point towards that fact. The PlayStation website features a page showing off all of the platform’s existing and upcoming exclusive games, ranging from God of War and Uncharted to the likes of Chimparty, only now it’s missing gaming auteur Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding.

The game was originally featured on the list, as you can see for yourself by visiting a cached version of the official PlayStation website’s “PS4 exclusives” page via the Wayback Machine, so this isn’t a long-running oversight. By visiting the page today, or simply by checking the screenshot below, it’s possible to confirm that the game has since been removed.

Death Stranding absent from official PS4 exclusives list

While it’s possible to speculate that Death Stranding might come to Microsoft’s Xbox One console, a far more likely exploitation would be an impending PC launch. In an official December 2015 press release announcing Sony Computer Entertainment’s new partnership with Kojima Productions, made following Hideo Kojima’s messy split from Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami, it was stated that the upcoming, unannounced title (now known to be Death Stranding) would also “become available on PC” following its initial launch exclusively on PS4.

It’s probable, then, that a PC version has already been quietly worked on behind the scenes at Kojima Productions. Heavy promotion for the console-exclusive from Sony and the free licensing of Guerilla Games’ proprietary Decima Engine, which powered the studio’s hit exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn, has likely been enough to ensure that the PS4 platform was the sole target of the game’s marketing up to this point.

With Death Stranding confirmed to be present at Gamescom 2019—where attendees can also go hands-on with demos for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Marvel’s Avenger—the timing seems to suggest that we may find out more about what platforms we can expect to see Hideo Kojima’s first independent game on. One thing’s for sure, though: Death Stranding will be available for PS4 on November 8.
