NPD: Retail Sales Decline As Digital Purchases Rise

The NPD Group has released sales data for the second quarter of 2013, and judging by the report, interest in digital games in growing at a steady rate while retail games lag behind.

A total of $2.88 billion was spent on video games during the period. Of that total, a whopping $1.77 billion was made up of digital purchases. That said, overall sales are down, with Q2 of 2012 bringing in $2.97 billion, marking a 3% decline.

This can obviously be attributed to the shrinking interest in retail games. It's clear boxed copies are becoming less and less relevant as we move closer to a digital future.
