Keychron Black Myth Wukong Wireless Keyboard Review

The Keychron Black Myth Wukong wireless mechanical keyboard immediately grabs attention with its superb theming. This isn’t some subtle nod to a game — it’s a full-on tribute, especially if you fork out the extra bucks for the Deluxe Version. It looks great, sure, but is it a good gaming keyboard? Here is my review

Special edition

With this special edition keyboard, the unboxing is part of the experience. The Deluxe Version comes in an almost square package, with the keyboard located in the bottom half, along with the usual accessories like a cable and keycap/switch removal tool. The top half of the box is dedicated to the extra golden keys and special Esc and rotary dial keycaps.

The keyboard immediately makes itself known with its heft. Boasting a solid aluminum build, this is a heavy keyboard which immediately gives off that high-end vibe. And that vibe carries through to the rest of the board, which is clearly made with layers of top-tier components to provide the typing feel and sound that Keychron has become known for.

Traditional switches

Switch options are interesting as, in a world where more and more gamers are opting for magnetic variants, Keychron has gone with the more traditional switch. In my review sample, I’ve been testing the Golden Pink switches, which are smooth but slightly heavier. It’s a good combination and, if I’m honest, feel and sound a lot better than current magnetic options. Sure, Hall-effect switches can win games in competitive first-person shooters, but when I’m not gaming, the typing experience is far from satisfying.

With that said, for those who feel that they absolutely need the latest ultra-fast and customizable magnetic switches, then you will need to look elsewhere.

If the provided switches aren’t for you, or you have some favourites that you want to swap in, the good news is that this keyboard is hotswappable, so you can toss in any (non-magnetic) 3-pin or 5-pin switches with ease.

Easy setup and customization

Getting connected is super simple thanks to the three supported methods: wired via USB-C, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth. Once paired with a PC, Keychron’s web-based configuration can be used to fine-tune settings. There’s no need to download any app, which is a nice bonus.

I’m a big fan of the keyboard’s 75% layout. That is a good middle ground between form and functionality. It’s small enough to avoid getting in the way during games where users want to swing the mouse around, and big enough to still boast function and arrow keys.

For non-Black Myth: Wukong fans, the aesthetic may look a little over the top, especially when the special keycaps adorn the Escape and Dial. But, I think it’s good that Keychron has fully embraced the theme and, ultimately, it’s down to the user on just how far they lean into the aesthetic.

Final Verdict

At $229.99 for the Standard Edition and $259.99 for the Deluxe, the Keychron Black Myth Wukong keyboard is certainly premium in its price. However, I feel that it does offer a premium experience in return, especially for diehard fans of the game who want to get their hands on the limited-edition piece. Keychron has gone all-in with the theme, while providing the option for users to tone down the aesthetic a little. There’s very little to fault and I look forward to more collabs in the future.
