Apple AirPods Pro 3 made a significant noise on arrival, but the buzz was not only felt in the headphone market but also in the ears of users. A viral controversy soon emerged as many users reported hearing a static hum in the earpieces, especially when the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) was active. Now, Apple has given the AirPods a firmware update, but the issue persists.
Users reporting ‘annoying whistle’ issue in AirPods Pro 3
Dubbed by many as “annoying whistle,” a static white noise came into notice when some users turned on ANC and did not listen to any media on the Apple AirPods Pro 3. The constant hum was reportedly more evident during flights. However, there were still many who complained about the noise on the ground as well.
Basic Apple Guy notably pointed out the problem in his blog. He wrote, “The issue was that the AirPod’s ear seal kept loosening, leading to a noise-cancellation feedback loop and a painfully loud, piercing screech from the AirPod. Attempts to readjust worsened the feedback, especially if I accidentally covered the external microphone with my finger. This happened multiple times, making the experience so unpleasant that I eventually switched to my spare EarPods for the remainder of the flight.”
Many users could relate to the problem. However, most expected that it would be fixed once Apple updated the firmware. But the new firmware update has already arrived, and the problem is no better. As per reports, users are continuing to face the same issue even after the update. Many took to social media platforms like Reddit to express this disappointment.
One user wrote, “Same as others report. Even with firmware 8B25, the [left] AirPod Pro 3 makes an annoying whistle/whine/screech when flying. ANC is almost unusable for me, adaptive mode helps a little, but what a disappointment. They are great on the ground, but why oh why do they not work on a plane????? This makes no sense.”
Another added, “Also having this issue on flight. It’s like a vibrating/ swooshing noise. Definitely the ANC as it reduces when you turn on adaptive and none with transparency. AirPods Pro 2 didn’t do this. AirPods Pro 3 are.”
Apple AirPods Pro 3 launched with great anticipation as the new headphones added many features while also improving sound quality. So far, its quality and build have garnered acclaim. Yet, this noise remains an issue for some users.
While there is no solution to the problem as of writing, Apple is offering replacements and reimbursements to affected customers. Additionally, they are reportedly testing new firmware for the AirPods Pro 3.
