Audeze Maxwell 2 review

Audeze Maxwell 2 Wireless Gaming Headset Review

The Audeze Maxwell 2 is the follow-up to one of the best wireless gaming headsets I’ve ever used. When I first heard about this new version, I was a little worried that the company might overshoot when trying to make an “upgrade.” Thankfully, Audeze has focused more on refinement and polish, rather than making sweeping changes to an already proven design and execution. However, does the Maxwell 2 do enough to justify its existence? After testing it with the latest firmware installed, here is my review.

The power of planar magnetic drivers

With its planar magnetic drivers, the Maxwell 2 remains one of few wireless gaming headsets implementing that tech. This time around, Audeze’s SLAM technology is implemented to further improve bass. It’s a combination that more gamers should know about, as tight, responsive bass is a boon for both immersive single-player games and competitive multiplayer titles.

The wireless aspect of the Maxwell 2 is also impressive. The headset connects with either a low-latency USB-C dongle, Bluetooth, wired USB-C, or 3.5 mm.

Lasting the fight

Audeze Maxwell 2 review

Opt for a wireless connection and the Maxwell 2’s big battery will keep users gaming for a claimed 80 hours of use. Once the headset eventually runs out of juice, fast-charging support means you won’t be waiting too long to get back into the fight.

Though I’m a big fan of the stock sound and Audeze’s tuning in general, the Maxwell 2 does have a companion app. The highlight has to be the 10-band EQ, allowing enthusiasts to really dig into the frequencies and find their ideal sound.

Microphone controls are also found within the app. The mic is okay for chatting with friends in-game, but I wouldn’t push beyond that for streaming or content creation. It’s best for clear communications and the AI noise reduction helps if you’re playing in a noisy environment.

Biggest victories

Audeze Maxwell 2 review

The Maxwell 2’s biggest victories are in sound quality, largely thanks to the planar magnetic drivers. They offer a unique clarity and separation that continually wins me over. They just sound cleaner without any artificial exaggeration.

Build quality deserves a nod, too, as this is a robust pair of cans with reassuring metal components. Though this may result in added weight, and the Maxwell 2 is indeed heavier than most, changes to the headband help with overall weight distribution.

One little thing

Audeze Maxwell 2 review

When it comes to downsides, I feel like the microphone is where most of my disappointment lies. While the audio quality is okay and the noise reduction works well, it just feels like a cheap add-on that doesn’t match up to the otherwise premium Maxwell 2 experience. And as this is a headset and not a headphone, the mic does matter.

Final Verdict

Starting at $329, the Audeze Maxwell 2 is a thoughtful refinement rather than a radical rethink. It excels where it matters most, delivering impressive sound quality, strong wireless performance, and a premium build that feels built to last. While it isn’t without compromises, those drawbacks are relatively minor in the context of the overall package.
