Mortal Kombat 1: Story, Trailer, Release Date Explained

Mortal Kombat 1: Story, Trailer, Release Date, DLC, & Pre-order Details

After multiple teases, Mortal Kombat 1 has finally officially been revealed through a new trailer. It’s not actually Mortal Kombat 12 and is instead setting back the clock all the way back, hence the name.

The Mortal Kombat 1 trailer has no gameplay, just a general (and vague) overview

As has been tradition, the debut Mortal Kombat 1 trailer has no gameplay and is just a CG video meant to convey the mechanics. Thankfully, NetherRealm’s CG trailers often provide a decent preview of the game, often even having Fatalities and moves that directly end up in the final version. For example, Scorpion’s Fatalities in both the Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11 cinematic debuts were in the actual games.

The Mortal Kombat 1 story, explained

Fire God Liu Kang wound back time in Mortal Kombat 11 and its Aftermath DLC, which are seemingly somewhat vital to understanding why Mortal Kombat 1 is a reboot. It appears as though Liu Kang is taking Raiden’s godly role and Kung Lao will be taking Liu Kang’s role as the chosen one.

The trailer shows Shang Tsung bringing chaos to the realm, which prompts “war with a god.” The story will be told through NetherRealm’s “genre-defining” campaign that features a cinematic narrative and “unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories.”

The Mortal Kombat 1 roster includes a bunch of classic fighters

The Mortal Kombat 1 roster hasn’t been fully unveiled, but a few have been confirmed so far. Those confirmed fighters are:

  • Liu Kang
  • Raiden
  • Kung Lao
  • Shang Tsung
  • Johnny Cage
  • Sub-Zero
  • Scorpion
  • Mileena
  • Kitana

When is the Mortal Kombat 1 release date?

The Mortal Kombat 1 release date is September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It’ll be $69.99 on all platforms.

The $109.99 Premium Edition will have the game, its Kombat Pack, and 1,250 Dragon Krystals, its in-game currency. The Kombat Pack will include six new fighters, five Kameo Fighters, and Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat was initially pitched as a Van Damme game, so this is seemingly a callback to that.

The $249.99 Kollector’s Edition is a physical version only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and will include the aforementioned content, as well as a 16.5-inch Liu Kang sculpture from COARSE, a related Liu Kang skin in the game, three exclusive art prints, a steel case, and a total of 2,700 Dragon Krystals.

People who buy those fancier editions will get the game on September 14.

What will the Mortal Kombat 1 DLC be?

DLC has been confirmed, but details are still vague. The game’s Kombat Pack will include six new fighters and five Kameo Fighters, which sounds like an assist system. These Kameo Fighters are separate from the main roster, too. It has been rumored that Homelander from The Boys and DC Comics’ Peacemaker will be DLC fighters, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

When will Mortal Kombat 1 pre-orders go live?

Mortal Kombat 1 pre-orders will open on May 19 at 10 a.m. PT.
