Hunt: Showdown 1896 Steam Reviews Plummet to ‘Mostly Negative’

Hunt: Showdown 1896’s Steam reviews have plummeted to ‘Mostly Negative’ in the wake of its new update. The popular FPS received a major overhaul this week, moving to CryEngine 5.11 with a brand new Colorado map. However, the update has been controversial, with players bemoaning its new UI and “predatory” pushing of paid content.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a significant update that has replaced the original version of the extraction shooter. But developer Crytek’s changes haven’t been well-received, with many calling it a step back for the game.

Why Hunt: Showdown 1896’s reviews have bombed after update

Hunt: Showdown 1896’s Steam reviews reflect player sentiment, with nearly 6,000 recent reviews moving its rating to ‘Mostly Negative.’ Its complete review rating is now ‘Mostly Positive.’

Players have been vocal about the issues they’re having with the update. On Hunt: Showdown’s official Reddit subreddit, players have criticized the UI now being cumbersome and difficult to navigate, while others have pointed out the game overly pushing its monetization options.

“The fact that we can’t equip two of the same consumable without backing out and selecting a second slot is ridiculous,” one user wrote.

Another user commented on the state of its in-game monetization, writing:

“If you manage to find your way to the skin page, it will show you not just skins you own, but ‘suggested’ skins, mixed in randomly with yours. I almost purchased a 500BB throwing axe skin because I thought I owned it through the battlepass or something, but no, it was just sandwiched between 2 skins I owned with a price tag.”

Crytek responded to criticisms of its UI, saying that it was “paying close attention to player feedback.”

“The overhaul was a long-requested and much-needed improvement, and our design team is dedicated to ongoing enhancements,” the developer wrote. “We’re striving to strike the right balance between simplicity and functionality as we continue to refine the UI.”
