1) Intro and Updates

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As many people seem to be doing/want to do, I cleared the game as a ninja and

wanted to see what the kunoichi gets for unlocks. Having spent the last hours

Ninja 5'ing Hard in combination with some schnapps, I was too used to jamming A

at the save screen, and next thing I knew I was starting the game over. I

decided to use this opportunity to put together this guide on the many items

you can unlock in Tenchu Z.

V. 0.9 All unlocks from Ninja Training to Mission 50

1.0 Confirmed Armor and Power unlocks, simplified Secret Mission unlock,

added in-game descriptions for Feet and Lurk, made a few corrections

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

2) FAQs and Notes

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Q. Holy spades! A dog just bit me, knocked me into a cesspool, alerting two

guards, Tomikichi, and the boss! I had just got my X amount of Stealth Kills,

and since I failed I didn't get my Skill unlocks!

A. Don't worry, complete a couple missions and you should get your Skills.

Q. How do I unlock all this stuff anyway?

A. You need to play single player, a good portion will unlock just by playing

through the missions. Some will require you to accumulate Ninja 5 rankings,

others require certain amounts of Stealth Kills, or killing the Tomikichi. You

will usually be able to tell when you get some unlocks, since they are tied to

achievements. Story missions (marked with a sign or something on mission select)

also generally give unlocks, same with secret missions.

Q. Okay, so unlocks are tied with achievements, which ones don't give you any

thing?

A. As far as I can tell, the Clear X amount of Missions, Ninja 5'ing all of

a difficulty, and some of the Tomikichi killed ones do not give you anything.

Q. What if I start a new game, since they are tied to achievements, doesn't

that mean I wouldn't get some unlocks?

A. Yu will still receive unlocks at say 1,000 SKs, even if you already had the

achievement. (It just makes it harder to track your SK progress if/when you

restart)

Q. How do I unlock secret missions?

A. See: 3) Secret Missions

Q. Can I unlock things online?

A. Yes and no, you can get Stealth Kills online but nothing should unlock until

you play a single player mission, after which all that you earned online should

become available.

Q. Do Tomikichi kills count that you score online?

A. I never got the achievements online, and the general consensus seems to be

'No.' If you are getting all the achievements you will have to play through

each level 3 times anyway, so you should have plenty of chances to kill the 50.

Q. Do I need to Ninja 5 the levels to unlock things?

A. Yes and no. There are some things that appear to always unlock when you

finish that mission, others appear to require X amounts of Ninja 5s. Unlocks

from Stealth Kills/Tomikichi do not care what rankings you get, of course.

Q. I can't get Ninja 5 ranks, any help?

A. Use the Choke Hold (sword sheathed), you can hold on to an enemy indefinitely

it seems, as long as nothing hits you, or you don't walk off a slight elevation,

or try to grab people too close to shoji doors. Since the enemy can't escape,

you may wait until the meter goes red/the heart beats to kill your prey for a

Total Stealth Kill. (You can also hit Right Bumper to slam them onto the ground

to help give you cover, killing with this method doesn't draw your sword, same

with dragging them to a wall and hitting A, well, you draw it and re-sheath it)

Total SKing every enemy gives you 800 points in addition to the points from the

SKs themselves, so a Ninja 5 rank, and lots of money, is practically guaranteed.

Q. So-and-so told me that this and that unlock only on *insert random mission*?

A. Some things do indeed only unlock on specific missions, all of which should

be identified in the sections below. Some things unlock with variables, like

Ninja 5s and Stealth Kills. If you are scoring less of both, you will have a

slower unlock progression than a buddy who gets them a lot. Playing online can

also alter your progression, since you get Stealth Kills and no single player

advancement.

Q. Are there any unlocks for 100% completion?

A. Nope, but obviously you would have everything by then.

Q. It says to unlock item X on Mission Y, yet I didn't get it/got it earlier?

A. Then the item in question is unlocked by one of the variables, that is to

say Stealth Kills/Tomikichi/Ninja 5s. I could be wrong, in which case see next

question.

Q. I know how to unlock something, how do I get it added?

A. If you find the method to unlock something, and are sure it is the actual

means of doing so, send it to me via the email listed at the top and it will be

added and you have my thanks.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Notes

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

* Some unlocks may not be accurate, due to coming from a variable unlock. (This

applies to a very small amount, mostly Items)

* I played through the game on Easy, getting Ninja 5 on every mission along

with killing each Tomikichi.

* If something is said to unlock at a specific stage and you aren't getting it,

make sure you are Ninja 5'ing the mission(s)(Although from what I have seen,

the static unlocks, like the rewards after Mission 9, will always be given to

you, regardless of performance)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3) Secret Missions - There are 5 secret missions in Tenchu Z. You get an

achievement and usually unlocks for completing each one.

You can tell if there is one by looking at the number of the missions,

since one will be missing.

To unlock them, simply complete the mission that is before it. I.e. to unlock

Mission 15, you would just need to complete Mission 14.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here is a list of the secret missions:

Mission 7

Mission 15

Mission 25

Mission 35

Mission 44

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

4) Skills/Abilities - These are what makes your ninja a ninja, or at least

allows them to perform lots of flashy moves and wondrous skills.

These pretty much all unlock via Stealth Killing.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4a) Physical Abilities - There are three Physical Abilities: Vitality,

Strength, and Agility.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vitality is how much life you have during a mission. It also effects the number

of Equipment slots you have.

Strength is your attack power during normal attacks.

Agility is how fast you move.

You can change how many points you have in each of those at any time in the

Ninja Village. You also unlock more points/higher max stats as you progress

through the story.

Certain amounts are required in specific abilities in order to utilize some of

the Secret Arts/Ultimate Arts/Skills, they will be greyed out if you try to use

them.

Personally, I like to max out Agility, and put Vitality > Strength, which works

for 48/50 missions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting Abilities - 210 points to distribute, 100 max

First Ability Upgrade - Complete Mission 17 - 300 points to distribute, 150 max

Final Ability Upgrade - Complete Mission 37 - 420 points to distribute, 200 max

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4b) Combos - These are all available from the start. Each costs 2,000 gold and

perform a variety of effects during melee combat. Generally, they are only good

for the bosses that you are forced to face in CQC, since you really shouldn't

be engaging in melee with any other enemies in the game. If you have to though,

it sure is fun to be able to really smack those guards around.

I recommend having at least one before Mission 17, you'll probably need it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About Combos:

There are two choices for your melee combos. 3-Hit, strong but slow, and 4-Hit,

weak but quick. For each hit of which ever one you choose, you may assign one

of the 6 Combo moves. The attack power of the move varies based on which one it

is and by the 'Grade' of the combo hit it is assigned to. It may also change the

way the move works, for example, Fang on the last hit of the 3-Hit knocks the

enemy down along with guard breaking.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roar - A launch attack from a standing position. Launch enemy into the air to

hit with extra blows.

Fang - A very powerful downward cut. Can break through enemies' guard.

Thrust - Sword thrust that knocks enemies backwards.

Moon - A spinning attack that hits everything around you. Good if you are

unlucky enough to be surrounded.

Tornado - A spinning attack that knocks over enemies around you but does

little damage.

Rain - A launching throw that lifts enemies into the air and smashes them

onto their heads.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4c) Secret Arts - Do you want to drive your enemies' skulls into the floor?

Amaze your friends online by crafting up to a dinner for 5? Or perhaps make

a kunoichi sound like a man? Regardless, Secret Arts are where you will find a

great supply of swell abilities to make you feel more like a ninja.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Left Trigger + X before being Attacked - These, as you can see from how you

activate them, are all used in melee combat. They need good timing to pull off,

and require your sword to be drawn.

Repel - Get a total of 20 Stealth Kills to unlock

Stagger - Get a total of 50 Stealth Kills to unlock

Shadow - Get a total of 200 Stealth Kills to unlock

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Repel 1 - Can repel and rebound an enemy attack leaving them exposed. Sword

must be drawn to use.

Repel 2 - Sends thrown weapons back at the thrower. Has same properties as

Repel 1. Sword must be drawn to use.

Repel 3 - The successor to Repel 2, returns thrown weapons at twice the power.

Sword must be drawn to use.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Stagger 1 - Parries an enemy's attack and staggers them. Use that chance to

escape. Sword must be drawn to use.

Stagger 2 - Increased stagger time over Stagger 1, giving you longer time to

escape. Sword must be drawn to use.

Stagger 3 - Greatly increased enemy stagger time, greatly increasing chances

of escape. Sword must be drawn to use.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Shadow 1 - Vanish in a puff of smoke, throwing enemies into confusion, and

then move behind them to strike. Sword must be drawn to use.

Shadow 2 - An improvement over Shadow 1, confusing more enemies. Sword must

be drawn to use.

Shadow 3 - An improvement over Shadow 2, now able to handle attacks from the

sides and rear too. Sword must be drawn to use.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Press and Hold X then release - These moves can be a pain to pull off, and

many questions are asked about it. You must have your sword drawn, hit X so

you attack, keep X held down and approach an enemy, let go and the move should

activate.

Shock - Get a total of 700 Stealth Kills to unlock

Drop - Get a total of 700 Stealth Kills to unlock

Gale - Get a total of 700 Stealth Kills to unlock

Note: Gale seems to be a pain to get to work, Drop may be the best of these, but

I haven't really tried out Shock.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shock 1 - Gathers power and then unleashes a shockwave. The attack properties

change depending on how long you charge.

Shock 2 - An improvement over Shock 1. When fully charged you can unleash

multiple guard breaking attacks.

Shock 3 - The ultimate Shock attack, unleashing a devastating shockwave. Can be

charged up to the third stage.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Drop 1 - Jump into the air while holding the enemy and bring them crashing down

onto their heads.

Drop 2 - A stronger version of Drop 1, damage increased if you perform from a

high location.

Drop 3 - The ultimate reverse drop technique. Causes massive damage to the

enemy's cranium.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Gale 1 - Slice through multiple enemies at high speed. Can be performed a

maximum of three times consecutively.

Gale 2 - A powered up Gale 1. Can now be performed a maximum of five times

consecutively.

Gale 3 - The ultimate Gale. Achieve the maximum five consecutive inputs and all

enemies take extra damage.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Push in Right Bumper + Left Stick - I've never felt the need for Armor or Power,

Badger is great though, definitely a must have skill.

Armor - Get a total of 400 Stealth Kills to unlock

Power - Get a total of 400 Stealth Kills to unlock

Badger - Get a total of 300 Stealth Kills to unlock

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Armor 1 - Uses 10% of your vitality to raise defence temporarily. Enemy attacks

are reduced by 30%.

Armor 2 - Uses 10% of your vitality to raise defence temporarily. Enemy attacks

are reduced by 50%.

Armor 3- Uses 10% of your vitality to raise defence temporarily. Enemy attacks

are reduced by 70%.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Power 1 - Uses 10% of your vitality to slightly raise attack temporarily.

Damage taken from enemies doubles when in effect.

Power 2 - Uses 10% of your vitality to slightly raise attack temporarily.

Damage taken from enemies doubles when in effect.

Power 3 - Uses 10% of your vitality to raise attack temporarily.

Damage taken from enemies doubles when in effect.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Badger 1 - A swift dash forward, remaining in low posture. Causes loud

footsteps, however.

Badger 2 - Badger Dash over a longer distance. Can be used for both escape and

attack.

Badger 3 - The ultimate dashing technique. Further increases the distance

covered, so assists stealth action.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right Bumper + Left Trigger + X - These are all good utility skills, Rice is

useful for online play if someone needs health.

Ears - Get a total of 200 Stealth Kills to unlock

Rice - Get a total of 100 Stealth Kills to unlock

Voice - Get a total of 300 Stealth Kills to unlock

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ears 1 - Allows you to detect moving enemies. Can not sense enemies who are

standing still.

Ears 2 - Has a wider sensing range than Ear 1, allowing the location of more

enemies to be sensed.

Ears 3 - Has the widest sensing range, allowing you to sense enemies over a

large area.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Rice 1 - Create up to two rice balls in the middle of a mission. You are

defenceless while making them.

Rice 2 - Create up to three rice balls in the middle of a mission. The speed

of making them is also increased.

Rice 3 - Create up to five rice balls in the middle of a mission. The speed of

making them is increased, decreasing the time spent defenceless.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Voice 1 - Copies the voice of an enemy and lures other enemies toward you.

Voice 2 - A more skillful impersonation, increasing the effective range, and

luring in more enemies at once.

Voice 3 - The ultimate impersonation, with a much wider range and the ability

to lure in multiple enemies at once.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4d) Ultimate Arts - Lots of neat ninja abilities here, I'd like to know where

one may purchase that cloth, too bad there isn't some clothing in the game made

from it, that would be crazy.

Recover - Get a total of 100 Stealth Kills to unlock

Wall - Get a total of 300 Stealth Kills to unlock

Eyes - Get a total of 20 Stealth Kills to unlock

Ceiling - Get a total of 200 Stealth Kills to unlock

vary depending on the user.

your escape if used well.

movements at long range.

Eyes 2 - Allows you to see farther than Eyes 1. Increases your ability to spot

and evade enemies.

Eyes 3 - Allows you to see farther than Eyes 2. Should greatly increase your

chances of remaining concealed.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Ceiling 1 - Allows you to temporarily cling to the ceiling. You can also move

for a short distance along the ceiling.

Ceiling 2 - Let's you cling and move across ceilings longer and farther than

Ceiling 1.

Ceiling 3 - Let's you cling and move across ceilings longer and farther than

Ceiling 2.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Conceal 1 - Use a cloth to conceal yourself from enemies. The cloth is small so

over-reliance could be dangerous.

Conceal 2 - A lower chance of being spotted than with Conceal 1. You are not

totally concealed however, so over-reliance is still dangerous.

Conceal 3 - Almost completely conceals you from the enemy. Greatly increases

your ability to remain concealed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4e) Skills - These are very nice innate abilities. Lurk and Feet at level 3 make

you nearly impossible to detect. Venom seems kind of pointless, I have never

been poisoned in this game, every thing else should be very useful in inflicting

death to your enemies, though.

Jump - Get a total of 50 Stealth Kills to unlock

Energy - Get a total of 500 Stealth Kills to unlock

Venom - Get a total of 100 Stealth Kills to unlock

ability to avoid enemy attacks.

Jump 2 - Increases the period of invincibility over Jump 1. Further increases

ability to avoid enemy attacks.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Sense - Allows you to sense enemy vitality. Enemy's vitality is displayed when

the Right Trigger is held down.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

5) Items - There are lots of neat items in this game, if the item is on the

following lists you automatically add it to your cache after a mission if you

find one, allowing usage until you run out of it.

When unlocking items, it adds them to the shop so you can buy as many as you

want.

Note: You only need to buy 1 Hook and B Sword, they will always stay in your

cache after usage.

Note: Most of these should unlock automatically, some appear to require Ninja 5

ranks, if it doesn't unlock, try getting Ninja 5s on stages you didn't and it

should become available.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

6) Clothing - Most of the unlocks in the game are clothing, thankfully they all

unlock in large groupings.

Note: You cannot preview the clothing. If you don't want to spend money on

things you may not like, disable Auto Save from Options in the main menu. You

may then buy whatever you want, try it out, and Load your save if needed.

Generally, for example, Jacket 1, Ninja 1, and Armor 1 will all be the same

colour, so if you like red, you can try to buy all '2s,' and so forth.

Ninja/Kunoichi have different clothing, of course, but share the same general

styles, usually. A few accessories are different on kunoichi compared to ninja,

Mark and Spare are the only ones I have noticed so far.

7) The Troublesome Tomikichi

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In each level of the game dwells an enemy called Tomikichi. They are armed with

a katana and wear a straw hat that looks like the kunoichi's unlockable

Straw/Mushroom Face items. When killed, he will always drop an item, some times

it will be a trap so don't be surprised if a smoke bomb goes off in your face

as you try to pick it up.

NOTE: You must kill each Tomikichi in all 50 missions. You can not play Mission

4 (for example) over and over to get the 50 kills. It does not matter what

difficulty it is on when you go back to find the ones you missed.

NOTE: You do not need to actually finish the mission for kill credit. You can

start the mission, hunt him down, kill him, and then return to Ninja Village.

Just make sure you save after doing so.

For every 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 Tomikichi that you kill, you gain an

achievement. As of right now, I believe you only get unlocks for killing all

50 Tomikichi. (I have confirmed no unlocks for 5 and 10 so far)
