Assassin’s Creed Odyssey PC Crash – Why Is Odyssey Crashing?

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is out now, but as usual with any massive open-world game, players are finding a lot of issues. If you’re playing on PC we’ve already detailed what you can do to fix your framerate and FPS, but what happens if your game doesn’t load at all? Are you experiencing an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey PC crash right at the beginning of the game? You’re not alone. We’ll try our best to help.

What Causes an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey PC Crash?

Right now, many Assassin’s Creed Odyssey PC players are reporting immediate crashing as soon as they start the game. There is no error message, just an immediate crash to desktop after the initial “warning” screen, followed by a request for a crash report. As of now there are a lot of threads about the crashing, and there are a number of reasons for it being suggested.

The most likely cause of crashing, however, seems to be that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on PC may not support CPUs without AVX (advanced vector extension) support. This is not mentioned in the Minimum System Requirements, but it seems to be the case. For many people this will not be a problem, but anyone with an older CPU may be out of luck.

Is There a Solution to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Crashing?

At the moment there is no solution to this crashing problem. Ubisoft support reps have supposedly told customers that they have not heard of a fix for the AVX issue. The Crew 2 and Steep apparently also did not support AVX-less CPUs, but support was patched in later after enough people mentioned it to Ubisoft.

The only solutions right now for this crashing issue with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is to either upgrade to a better CPU, or to tell Ubisoft Support directly and to post about it on the game’s official support forum. And then, hope for a fix. Good luck.
