Before you’d even unleashed your inner-battle royale hype man you were probably asking one thing about Respawn’s latest title: Is Apex Legends cross-platform? With strides elsewhere in the industry, it’d make sense for your mind to drift towards the idea of playing Apex Legends with Xbox One players on PS4 or vice-versa or, at the very least, sorting out a PC and Xbox One cross-play for Apex Legends. We’re here to answer those very questions. Well, EA and Respawn are…
Is Apex Legends Cross-Platform?
No, there is no chance to hop on and get involved in some Apex Legends cross-platform play on any platform at launch. EA’s FAQ says as much, stating: “We currently don’t support cross-platform play, but are always working on new features and improvements we can add to our game.”
That means you can’t play with an Xbox One player on PS4, a PS4 player on Xbox One, nor can you play with an Apex Legends PC player on Xbox One or PS4. Them’s the breaks and, for now, it might be a smart move: the bells and whistles can come later; a smooth launch with a solid player base is the name of the game at this stage.
Can I cross-play on Apex Legends across PC and Xbox One?
See above. Despite Xbox One and PC games often being among the first to take the cross-platform baby steps for any given game, there are currently no plans in place for that to happen in Apex Legends.
Has an Apex Legends cross-platform release date been announced?
While a cross-platform release date for Apex Legends hasn’t even crossed the minds of Respawn, it’s definitely something the team is acutely aware of. Speaking to VG24/7, Respawn design director Mackey McCandlish says “Cross-play is definitely an opportunity; it’s not something at launch.”
When coupled with EA’s own words mention “improvements” coming down the line (and at the risk of adding two plus two and getting five), it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Apex Legends introduce cross-play before 2019 is out, but don’t expect it anytime soon.
