Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Child, Adult, and Elder | What’s the difference between the ages?

Each member of your clan in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey fall under one of three age brackets: child, adult, or elder. Each of these ages has its pros and cons, and to be truly successful as a species you’ll have to use all three to your tribe’s advantage.

Below we’ll cover the difference between ages in Ancestors. We’ll tell you their strengths and weaknesses and let you know when the best time to switch to a new character is.

What’s the difference between child, adult, and elder clan members in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey?

Each age bracket fits a niche in Ancestors, and you need to make sure you’re keeping them in mind when you’re trying to survive in the primordial jungle.

Children

Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey Child

Children are the future of your clan, and they’re also pretty much useless. The most critical function of children, besides growing into adults, is supplying you with neuronal energy. If you’re not carrying a child, none of your actions will provide you with the experience you need to further your abilities. This means you always want at least one on your active clan member’s back when you’re doing anything.

If for some reason you end up in control of a child, there’s not much you can do to defend yourself. You’ll need to run for the nearest hiding spot quick and let the game switch over to an adult or elder so you can perform a rescue. Fortunately, children are pretty resilient and are immune to adverse status effects like bleeding and poison. Children also don’t require any water, food, or sleep, so you don’t have to worry about them other than making sure they don’t die.

Adults

Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey Adult

The most vital members of your clan in Ancestors are the adults. Only adult females are fertile, so the more of these you have, the more members you can add to your tribe. Adults’ biggest weakness is fear. They run out of dopamine quicker than elderly clan members, and as such, they tend to panic quicker. These members also can’t roam freely. When they reach your clan’s territorial boundaries, they will be seized by the fear effect, and you’ll have to either retreat or conquer your fear to proceed.

Pregnant adult females are the strongest clan members in the game. They have more stamina, energy, and intimidation power than any other type. Adult males come in second place and will be the grunts of your clan. Above all else, protect your adult female clan members. They’re irreplaceable and can mean the difference between prosperity and failure for your tribe.

Elders

Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey Elder

Elderly clan members have less stamina and energy than adults, but they have several strengths that make them very valuable to have around. It might seem heartless, but in Ancestors your elders are expendable. This means you can use them to stave off attacks from wildlife without risking the heartier members of your clan.

Elder females are no longer fertile, which makes them a go-to when you’ve got a tiger harassing your clan. Elder males can still mate with adult females and produce children but lack the stamina and energy of adult males.

One of the Elders’ biggest strengths is that they can explore without any fear. Unlike adults, they don’t have to deal with conquering their fear. However, you also don’t get the big boost in neuronal energy you normally would as an adult who conquers their fear. Elders are useful as forward scouts. You can discover landmarks with them with impunity, and since they’re more expendable than other members of the clan, you don’t have to worry too much about them dying. You’ll still want to send a child with them though so you can take in neuronal energy.
