What is Fortnite Sidegrading?

Sidegrading has been introduced to Fortnite thanks to the 11.40 update released on January 15, 2020. Essentially, the new feature looks as though it will allow you to sidegrade your chosen weapon, rather than upgrade it. Essentially, it seems as though through Sidegrading you are able to can change any weapon its rarity class to another weapon in its rarity class, via a Weapon Upgrade Bench. The example given, for example, is with the Assault Rifle. You will be able to change your Assault Rifle for a Heavy Assault Rifle of the same class thanks to Sidegrading.

Thanks to reliable Fortnite leaker Lucas7yoshi, we know that the above example of the Assault Rifle works through a leaked trailer for Fortnite Sidegrading, which you can watch below:

As you can see, Sidegrading looks to be a simple process. All you need to do is head to a Weapon Upgrade Bench with an applicable weapon. Right now, it’s not too clear on what weapons work and don’t work with Sidegrading. We know for sure, however, that you should be able to Sidegrade your standard Assault Rifle into a Heavy Assault Rifle. Whether this is the only Sidegrading weapon that works currently or that other weapons will be added in the future is unknown as of writing.

Follow these steps to Sidegrade in Fortnite:

  • Head to a Weapon Upgrade Bench with an applicable weapon
  • Choose the “Sidegrade Weapon” option
    • You’ll need 20 Metal, Stone, and Wood to Sidegrade

That’s all there is to it. Now get out there and change your Assault Rifle to a Heavy Assault Rifle.
