If you can purchase select players through the Items sub-menu. Here, you'll find a number of available players with special abilities, such as the ability to perform a group-clearing jump kick, a strong rookie or a more talented quarterback, among others.
There is a collection of cards featuring players, boosts and other assets that you can add to your collection, including Player and Combo Decks. Like the player cards, you can buy some with in-game coins, or if you prefer, an in-app purchase.
Keep in mind Decks are the better bargain, as you get more for your buck and, in some cases, an occasional surprise that really adds power to your team.
There are a number of power-ups available for each player, it just depends on their position, and in some cases, skill set. They usually unlock automatically, depending how you're performing on the field:
The quarterback can obtain a fire pass, which speeds up the flow of the play more than usual, and also makes it more likely for your receiver to catch the ball.
Offensive players can do everything from a spin punch to a flaming Hadouken-style Street Fighter uppercut to a powerful grand slam, which levels any rival players in their zone.
Receivers also have a bomb they can leave behind, which devastates any pursuing defensemen.
Boosts provide a general advantage to the team overall. Most powerful is the Coin Booster.
