Before you begin each stage, you'll have a five-second head start before the ball rolls. Use this time to your advantage and try to pre-plan your route and put the pieces in place.
If a stage places the ball on a lower area of the board and you have a goal that appears in the higher section best thing to do is to try to focus more on pieces that will get it to that higher area.
The pause button can be a lifesaver even though you won't be able to see the board while the game is paused, but you will have a mental picture in your mind as to where certain pieces are.
Also, in some cases, it's better to have the ball on the tile, as you can change its route and get closer to the goal.
